Assam Student Stabs Teacher to Death in Classroom

16-year-old detained after killing chemistry teacher Rajesh Baruah Bejawada in Sivasagar. Incident shocks educators statewide

Guwahati: In a horrifying incident a Class 11 student stabbed his teacher to death in the classroom at a school in Upper Assam's Sivasagar district on Saturday. The 16-year-old, who attacked chemistry teacher Rajesh Babu Bejawada (55) after he was scolded for poor performance, has been detained and is now being questioned.

Mr Bejawada taught chemistry and also held managerial responsibilities in a private school.

Informing that the teacher had scolded the student over his performance in chemistry and asked him to call his parents to school for a meeting, police said that later in the day, the student came to the class in casual clothes. The teacher asked him to leave. Suddenly, the student attacked Mr Bejawada and stabbed him repeatedly with a knife.

The students who witnessed the stabbing said that the accused was in casuals when he came to the class. The teacher asked him to leave and shouted at him when he did not listen.

“He took out a knife and struck the teacher on the head and stabbed him. We did not know he was carrying a knife. Our teacher was on the floor and bleeding heavily,” the students while narrating the horrifying incident said. The teacher was rushed to Dibrugarh, but died on the way to the hospital.

The incident has come as a shocker for the teachers who expressed surprise over the incident and held the growing intolerance among the students responsible for the incident. Expressing deep anguish over the incident, teachers said that such incidents are alarming as discipline is necessary to groom the future of the students.

Mr Bejawada was a resident of Andhra Pradesh and was working as the in-charge teacher of the Sai Vikash Academy in Savasagar.
