Bengaluru: As many as 112 violation cases of water misuse have been identified by officials of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) in a week by both individuals and entities in Bengaluru city. After identification, erring individuals/entities have been penalised amounting to Rs 5.6 lakh and steps are being initiated to recover the fine amount from erring persons/entities.

Staring at a looming water shortage during summer, the BWSSB on February 14 prohibited the use of drinking water for activities such as vehicle/ cleaning/gardening/construction/entertainment/decorative fountains and other non drinking purposes in cinema halls and shopping malls, under sections 33 and 34 of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1964.

The action from BWSSB to prohibit residents from water misuse came after scientists attached to IISc, Bengaluru warned of groundwater depletion and to address potential water shortage in the city.

A press release from BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar on Sunday stated among the water misuse violations in Bengaluru city, South Zone recorded 33 violations highest of all the zones followed by West and East Zone with 28 cases each and North Zone reported 23 violation cases in a week. The erring individuals/entities have been imposed penalties and steps will be initiated to recover the penalty amount from erring persons/entities.

Dr Manohar wanted the residents of Bengaluru to avoid water misuse and pointed out to them that the water is transported to Bengaluru from a distance of nearly 100-km, making it a precious commodity and asked the residents to join hands with BWSSB efforts to ensure equitable water distribution to all areas.

Issuing a caution to the residents on optimum use of water, the BWWSB Chairman said a campaign on imposing penalties on water misuse will be extended in coming days to serve as a detriment to the individuals and entities on water misuse.
