Trapping victims with alprazolam tablets is the new modus operandi

Hyderabad:Rachakonda police exposed an interstate gang that used an unusual but dangerous method to rob unsuspecting victims after giving them water that contained alprazolam tablets to drink. Those consuming such a drink become weak and faint, almost immediately. The gang targets old and middle-aged women.

Rachakonda police commissioner G. Sudheer Babu said, “The gang frequents public places and usually approach people asking for directions. One of the members offers water to the targetted victim, who has no reason to suspect anything fishy. As soon as the individual drinks the water, the person feels weak, which is when the gang strikes.”

Once the victim is in a vulnerable state, the gang uses a variety of tricks to lure the person with myriad schemes like finding a bag full of cash, which they could share provided the victim hands over their gold ornaments as a guarantee. Or they offer a handsome amount in exchange for a tour of the city. Greed drives such vulnerable people and they become easy prey, the commissioner said.

The gang members have been identified as Gujarathi Kishan from Ahmedabad, and three of his accomplices from Delhi. All of them are facing similar charges in Delhi.

The victims are too disoriented and confused after being drugged. The gang members managed to evade being captured by the CCTV cameras but one camera in Jawaharnagar caught them. Police tracked them down and apprehended the gang members, who were produced before the court on Wednesday for police custody.
