India and Taliban Hold Landmark Talks in Dubai on Humanitarian Issues

Dubai witnessed a historic diplomatic breakthrough as India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, held the first officially acknowledged meeting with senior Taliban officials, including Afghanistan’s Defense Minister, Mullah Yaqoob Muttaqi. The discussions, which took place on Wednesday, centered on humanitarian aid, trade through the Chabahar Port, healthcare improvements, refugee rehabilitation, and regional security.

The meeting marked India’s first formal engagement with the Taliban since their takeover of Kabul in 2021. Both sides explored opportunities to enhance bilateral ties, including collaboration in sports, particularly cricket, which holds significant appeal for Afghanistan’s youth.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the talks as a “significant step” in addressing Afghanistan’s humanitarian and developmental challenges. Images of the meeting were shared on X by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, showcasing officials engaged in productive dialogue.
India reaffirmed its commitment to Afghanistan’s development, pledging additional support for healthcare, refugee assistance, and infrastructure projects. The use of Iran’s Chabahar Port, operated by an Indian state-run entity, emerged as a key topic, with both sides agreeing to leverage it as a hub for trade and humanitarian aid delivery.

Taliban officials expressed gratitude for India’s continued assistance. They assured sensitivity to New Delhi’s security concerns, including the activities of Pakistan-based militant groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). India emphasized the need to ensure Afghan soil is not used for anti-India activities.

This strategic engagement underscores India’s renewed focus on Afghanistan, a move that strengthens its regional influence while causing unease in neighboring Pakistan.
