Bhutan and Mauritius Honour Former PM Manmohan Singh at His Funeral

NEW DELHI: Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Mauritius foreign minister Dhananjay Ramful paid tributes to the memory of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his funeral in the national capital on Saturday, marking their close ties with India. The Bhutanese monarch laid a wreath on the mortal remains of Manmohan Singh during his funeral at Nigambodh Ghat. Special prayers had also been organised in the Himalayan nation on Friday.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Mauritius also announced that the flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings until sunset on Saturday.

In a note, Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam's office stated, "Following the passing away of Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of the Republic of India, the public is hereby informed that the Mauritius flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings until sunset on Saturday, the day of his funeral."

It added: "An appeal is also made to the private sector for all flags to be flown at half-mast."

The Indian Ocean nation just recently saw a change of guard at the top following polls there, but the close relationship with India continues irrespective of the party or leader in power.

It may also be noted that Bhutan’s King had visited New Delhi just earlier this month and had held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which the “Bhutanese side thanked the government of India (GoI) for stepping up the development support for Bhutan under the 13th Five Year Plan (2024-29) and India’s support for RGoB’s (Bhutanese government’s) economic stimulus programme”.
