Earthquake is this young man’s nickname

Durga Prasad, nicknamed 'Bhukampam' after his 1993 birth during the Latur earthquake, shares his unique story from Nizamabad
Nizamabad: Athamakuri Durga Prasad, a private school teacher in Bodhan town of Nizamabad district, is known by his sobriquet, ‘Bhukampam (earthquake)’.

Family members, relatives and colony residents fondly call him ‘Bhukampam’ as Prasad was born on September 30, 1993, when a major earthquake had hit Latur district in Maharashtra. That is what he is called in Saraswathinagar, Thattikot, Sharbati canal and other areas in the town.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Prasad, now 31 years old and a teacher, said,“Since my childhood, I was thrilled to be addressed as ‘Bhukampam’. People get surprised when they hear my friends or family members calling me by that name, he said.

“I have become used to this word over last three decades,” he said, with asmile.

The epicentre of the Latur earthquake was 200 km from Bodhan town. When tremors struck Bhuj in 2001, he was shocked. The earthquake at Mulugu on Wednesday also worried him, he said.

Tremors hit erstwhile Khammam, Warangal, Nalgonda and Rangareddy districts. Durga Prasad said he prayed to God to save people from such natural calamities.
