Tirupati: A former colleague sexually assaulted a 20-year-old woman near Damaraya village in Sullurpet mandal of Tirupati district late on Tuesday night. The incident came to light on Thursday after the victim approached Sriharikota police station and lodged a complaint.
Sub-inspector M. Raghunath said the victim, working in a private company and living with her boyfriend Subramanyam in Sullurpet, hails from Nellore district
On Tuesday morning, Subramanyam consumed alcohol with the woman's former colleagues Balaji and Edumalai in Sullurpet town. Later that night around 9:30 p.m., Balaji and Edumalai met the couple when the woman alighted from her company bus at the Y-Junction in Sullurpet.
"Learning that it was the woman's birthday the next day, the duo convinced the couple to visit the nearby Shivalayam Temple and seek blessings. However, Balaji and Edumalai took the couple to an isolated area near Damaraya, close to the Pulicat Lake.
There, they beat up Subramanyam and tied him up. They forcibly took Subramanyam's mobile phone and transferred money from his account to themselves via UPI payment.
Later, while Balaji kept a watch over tied up Subramanyam, Edumalai took the woman aside. He threatened that he would harm her boyfriend if she resisted. He then sexually assaulted the woman and stole her cash and mobile phone. Balaji and Edumalai then fled from the area, the SI stated.
The victims, along with their family members, filed a complaint at the Sriharikota police station. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
