Floods in Godavari Submerge Villages, Relief Efforts Underway

Floods in Godavari River still affect villages in Eluru and Konaseema districts. Relief efforts ongoing as people use boats for essentials

Kakinada: Though floods in River Godavari have started receding, many villages in Velerupadu and Kukkunuru mandals of Eluru district and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district are still marooned.

People of the villages are using boats to get their essential commodities and for other urgent needs.

People of various villages in Kukkunuru mandal have been accommodated at shelters in Polavaram project rehabilitation colonies at Rayakunta, Kivvaka and Marripadu. The evacuees have decided to continue in the shelters till the end of August in anticipation of additional floods this month.

Transport facilities to 15 villages have not yet been restored, as breaches caused by Gundeti Rivulet between Dacharam and Kukkunuru and Mutyalampadu Road have not been filled.

People of Kukkunuru said while compensation has been paid to victims of floods who have taken shelter in rehabilitation colonies, they have not yet been provided any relief.

In Velerupadu mandal, 30 families from Rudramkota-2 area have been provided shelter in nearby hills. Government has provided two boats to villagers, so that they can go to mandal headquarters and get their essential commodities.

Many people of the flood-affected villages are daily wage labourers. They have been without earnings due to floods and heavy rains.

In Konaseema district, many islet villages, like Burguvanilanka, Arigelavaripeta, Ganti Pedapudilanka and Udimudilanka, are under flood waters. Due to inundation of the Kanakayalanka causeway, transport facility remains cut off between Konaseema and West Godavari districts.

According to reports, horticulture and commercial crops in Konaseema district have been completely damaged. Officials said they will enumerate the damage after floodwaters recede.
