HDMA to plant four crore saplings
Hyderabad: Under the Vana Mahotsavam 2024-25, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has proposed to plant four crore saplings and distribute one crore saplings in its jurisdiction.
Saplings will be planted in parks, urban forests, medians, and educational institutions along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), road corners and rotaries, etc. “Unlike in the core city, which is part of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, in the HMDA region there are a lot of open spaces where there is a scope to plant more saplings, and new roads are also being constructed. We will also plant saplings in the central medians of these roads,” said an HMDA official.
In parks, the HMDA has decided to plant forest species, ornamental and fruit-bearing species as a part of Vana Mahotsavam. While Nemalinara and Pagoda are some of the forest species that will be planted by the HMDA, Scaevola will be used for ornamental planting.
In parks, the types of saplings that will be planted are forest species ornamental and fruit yielding ones and in the central median mostly ornamental species will come up. Similarly neem, guava and other species will be distributed to households. In addition to HMDA, the GHMC has also set a target of planting 25 lakh saplings wherever feasible and distribution of 5 lakh saplings to households.
“In GHMC, we have grown saplings in the 600 ward-level nurseries and on private lands too,” said a GHMC official.
