Guwahati: The Assam BJP legislature party on Sunday unanimously re-elected Himanta Biswa Sarma as its leader, paving the way for him to continue as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term.
Soon after his election, Sarma met Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhawan and staked claim to form the government on May 12. He submitted a letter of support signed by 102 NDA MLAs, following which the Governor invited him to form the government.
The legislature party meeting was held in the presence of central observers J.P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini.
In the recent Assembly elections, the BJP won 82 seats, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front secured 10 seats each, taking the NDA tally to 102. This marks the alliance’s third consecutive victory in the state and the BJP’s highest-ever seat tally in Assam.
The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah expected to attend. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia said preparations were under way for the swearing-in on May 12, describing it as a “historic moment”.
In previous elections, the BJP had won 60 seats in both 2016 and 2021, forming governments with allies to reach a majority of 86 in 2016 and 75 in 2021.
