HMWS&SB Enhances Manhole Safety with Red Paint, Grills, and Warning Signs
Hyderabad: The HMWS&SB has started painting deep manhole covers in red colour and installing safety grills. Red boards and warning boards have also been set up at deep manholes. The board in a press release issued on Monday urged the people not to open manhole covers for any reason at any time. There have been instances where people have opened the manhole covers to drain out the rainwater stagnating on the roads, resulting in mishaps.
In the GHMC area, the sewerage networks extends to 5,767 km and the peripheral urban local bodies (ULBs) have around 4,200 km of drain lines. The board oversees 6,34,919 manholes including 63,221 deep ones, including 26,798 in the GHMC region, Safety grills have been installed for almost all the deep manholes in the GHMC area, board said in a press release.
HMWS&SB managing director C. Sudarshan Reddy on Monday held a review meeting and announced the monsoon plan as part of which comprehensive guidelines have been drafted to ensure safety of the people by reviving the Central Safety Protocol Cell (CSPC) and Emergency Response Teams (ERTs).
The board has decided to use pollution identification to spot and resolve the drinking water pollution during the monsoon.
