Hyderabad: GHMC grants Rs 2 lakh per ward for sports kits
Hyderabad: Corporators of 134 of the 150 wards of the GHMC have sent requests seeking sports equipment. The GHMC standing committee recently approved the allocation of Rs 2 lakh for each ward to procure sports equipment.
The corporators have sought cricket, volleyball, shuttle badminton and football kits, among others.
This is the for the first time in three years that the GHMC is paying for sports equipment. Corporators said that the quality of equipment received earlier was average.
"We mentioned in the standing committee meeting that the quality of sports equipment should be of the best quality," said two GHMC standing committee members that Deccan Chronicle spoke with.
Verification revealed that GHMC officials were mostly focusing only on sports during the annual summer coaching camps, and ignoring the subject for the rest of the year.
"The officers are mostly focusing on generating revenue by leasing out sports grounds and complexes owned by the corporation. The focus is less on training those interested in sports and scaling up infrastructure," said a GHMC official.( Source : Deccan Chronicle )
