Hyderabad Plans 12 Rainwater-Holding Structures to Prevent Waterlogging, Traffic Woes

Hyderabad: M. Dana Kishore, principal secretary, municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) department, has proposed constructing 12 rainwater-holding structures at locations which experience water stagnation even if there is moderate spell of rain. The conditions worsen during downpours. The initiative is expected to cost `8.07 crore.

This follows a direction by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to the MA&UD department to ensure that commuters do not encounter waterlogging on roads, which causes traffic congestion, during the rainy season.

Near the Khairatabad RTA office, where one such structure has been proposed, commuters wading through knee-deep water and cars being stuck are a common sight during rains.
The capacity of these 12 rainwater-holding structures is 23.35 lakh litres and the probable date of commencement of works is the last week of June. Tenders have been floated for the process, and works will be executed by the GHMC.

Ten of the structures will be located in the Khairatabad zone and one each in the Serilingampally and Charminar zones.
The design of these structures will be similar to underground sumps, according to GHMC officials. They will have pumps and an underground pipeline to carry the water into the nearest stormwater drain.

“Once the structure is filled with water, the automatic mechanism will pump the water to the nearest drain,” said a GHMC official.
