Inter practical exams start under CCTVs for first time

The move comes amid longstanding allegations of malpractice in private colleges, where examiners are allegedly bribed to award perfect scores

Nizamabad: For the first time, Intermediate practical examinations are being conducted under CCTV surveillance across the state, a pilot scheme that will run until February 22. Government junior colleges and government sector institutions, including residential and model colleges, have installed cameras in their laboratories, while several private junior colleges have reportedly ignored the Telangana Board of Intermediate Education's directive.

The move comes amid longstanding allegations of malpractice in private colleges, where examiners are allegedly bribed to award perfect scores. Critics claim that some institutions offer examiners double their government allowance — an additional Rs 6,000 on top of a Rs 3,000 incentive — to secure 30/30 marks in practicals, a practice that influences overall grades and attracts admissions.

Approximately 10 lakh science stream students are appearing for the practical exams, which are conducted in two sessions — 9 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm — in respective college laboratories. The Board of Intermediate Education has also set up a command control centre at its headquarters to monitor the CCTV feeds from government institutions.

A senior lecturer, speaking anonymously to Deccan Chronicle, noted that the use of CCTV is likely to impact exam results and criticised private colleges for resisting the new norms, suggesting that such institutions may continue to favour students from wealthier families.
Meanwhile, Nizamabad district intermediate education officer T. Ravi Kumar assured that measures including District Examination Committees, High Power Committees, and flying squads are in place to prevent malpractices during the exams.
