Jana Sena Leader Alleges CRZ Violations in Vizag

Jana Sena’s Murthy Yadav accuses a hospitality firm of violating CRZ rules in Visakhapatnam, demanding action against groundwater extraction

Visakhapatnam: Jana Sena leader Peethala Murthy Yadav has alleged violations of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) by a hospitality company, which is building a multi-storeyed complex at the site where Taj Gateway Hotel stood until its demolition in Visakhapatnam.

In his formal complaint lodged with district collector Harendhira Prasad, Murthy Yadav charged that the hospitality unit is drilling six to eight borewells within 150 metres of the sea to extract groundwater for commercial purposes.

"These activities violate the CRZ notifications of union ministry of environment issued in 2011 and 2019, which explicitly prohibit groundwater extraction for commercial purposes within the CRZ," the JS leader told Deccan Chronicle.

He said he had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the AP High Court last year on illegal permanent structures in Bhimili. The court ordered the district administration to file a report on CRZ violations from Ramakrishna Beach to Bhimili Beach.

Murthy Yadav expressed concern that the district administration has neither complied with the court orders nor acted on new violations of the CRZ regulations.

The Jana Sena leader called upon Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation to halt construction of the new multi-story commercial building, which is violating CRZ notifications as well as standing orders of the AP High Court.
