Kerala assembly passes resolution to rename the state as “Keralam”

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution to rename the state as "Keralam."

The proposal, presented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, received support from MLAs of both the ruling CPM-led LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF.

The resolution is to be sent to the Central Government. Although the assembly unanimously passed a similar resolution in August 2023, it failed to receive approval due to certain technical issues.

The initial resolution called for amendments to both the First and Eighth Schedules of the Constitution. However, the Union Home Ministry recommended altering only the First Schedule. Consequently, the resolution was reintroduced. There has been a persistent demand to rename the state, which remains 'Government of Kerala' in the Constitution.
