KIMS doctors treat rare myeloma case
Kurnool: In a rare medical case, doctors at the KIMS hospital in Kurnool diagnosed and treated a patient suffering from blood cancer, which initially manifested as kidney issues.
Govindappa, a 64-year-old resident of Aluru, got admitted to KIMS after experiencing breathlessness, swelling in the legs and reduced urination.
Initial evaluations by nephrology department revealed blood and protein leakage in his urine, along with elevated serum creatinine levels, indicating kidney dysfunction.
Further comprehensive investigations unveiled the underlying cause to be multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. In this condition, cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that get deposited in vital organs like the heart and kidneys, leading to their failure.
Doctors put Govindappa immediately on chemotherapy to treat the underlying multiple myeloma. Following the treatment, his condition showed improvement.
Dr. K. Anantha Rao, a consultant nephrologist and transplant physician at KIMS, said, "The root cause of the patient's heart and kidney dysfunction had been the presence of blood cancer. As we identified the case early, we could save the patient's life."
