Mancherial to Get ₹249 Crore Protection Walls Against Floods
Adilabad: People living in low-lying areas along the Godavari river in Mancherial town are likely to get relief with the state government having decided to build protection walls to save the town from the backwaters of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme (KLIS).
The state government allocated ₹ 248.99 crore for the construction of the walls. Many colonies in Mancherial town were inundated during monsoon last year.
The wall will extend from Gauathameshwara temple on the Godavari College Road to Quarry Road in Andalamma Colony, also from Godavari River College Road to Seetharampalli in Naspur municipality and from Godavari College Road to Vempalli village in Hazipur mandal.
The irrigation department conducted a survey and prepared a proposal for construction of the retaining wall. River Godavari flows beside the Mancherial town. The department has identified colonies and buildings that are affected by the Kaleshwaram project.
The Kaleshwaram backwaters not only inundate colonies in Mancherial town but also inundate standing crops in Chennur Assembly constituency.
The department identified NTR Nagar, Padmashali Colony, LIC Colony, Reddy Colony, Balaji Nagar and Old Mancherial as the most vulnerable areas.
Mancherial MLA Kokkirala Premsagar Rao said the protection walls would save the colonies from being inundated, especially during the monsoon. He said work on the protection wall will begin soon and will be completed as early as possible.
