MANUU gets BCI nod to start law courses
Hyderabad: The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has received approval from the Bar Council of India to start offering law courses from the current academic year. The development was confirmed by MANUU registrar Prof Ishtiaque Ahmed, following the receipt of the official letter on June 17.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Syed Ainul Hasan, in a press statement, expressed joy over this achievement, calling it a landmark moment in MANUU’s history. He highlighted the importance of this step in the context of the New Education Policy 2020, which advocates for the introduction of legal education in regional languages. The recommendation was strongly supported by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Higher Education, chaired by Member of Parliament Shri Vivek Thakur, he informed.
In response to the committee's recommendations, MANUU will now offer a range of law programmes, including a five-year integrated BALLB (Honours), a three-year LLB, and a one-year LLM plus Ph.D in law. All these courses will be delivered in Urdu medium, making legal education more accessible to Urdu-speaking students across the country.
Prof Ahmed emphasised the responsibility of Urdu enthusiasts to promote these programmes, encouraging students nationwide to pursue legal studies in their native language. He added that MANUU secured the Bar Council's approval after meeting all the required conditions.
Prof Tabrez Ahmed, Dean of the School of Law, mentioned that entrance tests for these courses have already been conducted, and admissions will be based on the marks obtained in these tests.
