Mohanlal Denies Fleeing Amid Film Industry Crisis

Mohanlal denies fleeing Malayalam film industry crisis, stresses resignation from AMMA was for personal reasons

Thiruvananthapuram: Malayalam film actor Mohanlal clarified on Saturday that he did not flee from the crisis engulfing the Malayalam film industry, which arose after serious allegations of sexual harassment were levelled against prominent actors.

Mohanlal, who recently resigned as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), declined to comment on the cases, stating that the matter was sub judice and under police investigation. His remarks came after a function held to launch the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) in Thiruvananthapuram.

The actor addressed the media for the first time following numerous sexual harassment complaints that have shaken the Malayalam film industry. Cases of rape and assault have been filed against prominent figures, including CPM MLA and actor M Mukesh, as well as actor Siddique, who stepped down as the general secretary of AMMA.

Mohanlal stated that the current crisis should not escalate to the point of devastating the Malayalam film industry. "My absence from Kerala was due to personal reasons, which is why my response was delayed," he explained, noting that he was preoccupied with his wife's surgery and the production of his new film, 'Barroz.' Consequently, the release of his films has been deferred for the time being.

The decision to postpone the movie releases was taken recognizing that the current time is not suitable, he said.

The actor said cinema reflected society; what transpires in the broader world also occurs within it. AMMA is not merely a trade union; it is an entity established for the welfare of its members. Addressing the Hema Committee report is a responsibility that falls on the entire film industry.

AMMA is facing blame for a wide range of issues. The majority of questions are directed at me and AMMA. After consulting with my lawyers, I have chosen to resign from the presidency of AMMA," he stated.

He said AMMA is not responsible for responding to the Hema Committee report. Amma has a series of activities to be carried out including the responsibility to provide pensions to the members, offer insurance, construct houses, and organize medical camps.

Mohanlal said he announced his resignation as the president of AMMA after securing the consent of all office-bearers via a Google Meet session.

He stated that the Malayalam film industry is on the brink of collapse. "When I entered acting, facilities were scarce. It's an industry filled with talented actors. Let's not undermine this industry by solely concentrating on Malayalam cinema. The government and police are investigating the cases against the offenders. This matter has escalated to the judiciary. Remember, this industry employs tens of thousands of individuals," he remarked.

He stated that resigning from AMMA was neither a defeat nor an escape. Many allegations are being hurled at them without merit. The Hema Committee report has offered numerous recommendations. This committee appears to be beneficial. The aim is to advance the film industry positively. If individuals have grievances, they should report them to the police. It is unjust to single out and vilify one organization alone, he said.

Mohanlal stated his support for a separate association for junior artists to ensure justice for all. He denied being part of any power group in Malayalam cinema, saying, "I don't belong to any power group. This is the first time I've heard of such a thing." He also mentioned that his knowledge of the matter is limited to what has been reported in the media.
