Monsoon sets in four days early

Hyderabad: The Southwest Monsoon set in Hyderabad on Thursday, four days ahead of the IMD's prediction of “any day between June 9 and 13”.

The early onset marks a significant deviation as monsoon typically hits the state in the second week of June. While extending the yellow alert to June 9, IMD officials said that parts of the state, including Hyderabad, will continue to receive rainfall until June 10.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahbubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal districts on Friday. The rainfall will extend to Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Mulug, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Siddipet and Jangaon districts on Saturday.

On Thursday, Hyderabad experienced significant rainfall, with several areas recording moderate to heavy showers. Jubilee Hills received an average cumulative rainfall of 19.5 mm, while Yousufguda recorded 14.4 mm. Serilingampally was hit with 12.5 mm of rain within an hour, causing severe waterlogging. Other affected areas included Begumpet, Khairatabad, and Chandanagar.

The heavy downpour led to widespread traffic chaos across the city, especially near the Secretariat, Begumpet and Khairatabad. The waterlogging also exposed the city's inadequate drainage infrastructure.
Social media platforms were abuzz with residents expressing their frustration over the city's abysmal infrastructure.

One Twitter user was bang on, "If this is the state of Hyderabad after an hour of drizzle, I dread the thought of enduring three months of monsoon!"

Across the state, Siddipet's Rayapole recorded a staggering 84.0 mm, Sangareddy's Hathnoora saw 59.3 mm, and Jangaon's Palakurthy was hit with 58.5 mm of rainfall, according to Telangana Development Planning Society.
