Nagarjunasagar Project to Release Water for Farmers

Water release from Nagarjunasagar Project to benefit farmers in Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Khammam districts, safeguarding crops in over 2 lakh acres
Nalgonda: In good news for farmers in Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam districts, irrigation officials have decided to release water to the left canal of the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP), following heavy inflows in upstream areas filling up the reservoir.

Ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Tummala Nageswara Rao and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy are expected to be present at the dam when the water is released on Friday. Later, at around 4 pm, the members would inspect operations at the dam.

The decision to release water came after the water level at the project increased to 530.9 feet from 506.7 feet in the last four days. The full tank level at the project is 590 feet and the gross storage capacity is 312 tmc ft(thousand million cubic feet).

On July 27, the storage stood at 126 tmc ft. This increased to 169.9 tmc ft by Thursday.

Currently, the inflow to NSP is around 2,08,917 cusecs (one cubic foot per second) and the outflow is 8,344 cusecs.

Irrigation officials viewed the release of water as a cautious decision as they expected increased inflows till Friday evening and the water could breach full tank level if this rate of inflow continued.

The NSP's left canal caters to farmers in Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam districts. The cultivation area in this ayacut had reduced in this cropping season as storage level at NSP was at dead storage level of 510 feet just a fortnight ago.

NSP executive engineer Mallikarjun said the schedule for releasing water to the left canal for Kharif season will be released soon.
The release of water on Friday will help protect crops in over 2 lakhs acres, Mallikarjun said, as he credited the lifting of crest gates at Srisailam Dam for NSP receiving around 24 tmc ft of water daily.
