NCRC Conference Tackles Corporal Punishment in Schools

NCRC holds conference in Visakhapatnam to address corporal punishment, urging the creation of child-friendly schools and 'Prahari Clubs'

Visakhapatnam: The National Child Rights Commission (NCRC) on Tuesday held a district-level conference to address the pressing issue of corporal punishment in educational institutions.

In line with the Right to Education Act of 2009, the commission underscored its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of physical or mental abuse inflicted on students.

Kesali Apparao, chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Child Rights Commission, warned of stringent action against perpetrators under the Andhra Education Act of 2009. He emphasised the pivotal role of schools in shaping young minds and urged the establishment of ‘Prahari Clubs’ in every institution.

These clubs, he explained, will serve as watchdogs for child welfare, addressing issues such as school dropouts, child marriage, child labor, and drug abuse.

Apparao called for a comprehensive approach to child protection, advocating for widespread awareness campaigns through posters, hoardings, and wall paintings. He stressed the importance of drug prevention messages in this campaign.

The regional joint director highlighted the leadership role of principals, lecturers, and headmasters in creating a conducive learning environment.

He urged them to lead by example and foster a culture of respect and empathy within their institutions.Echoing similar sentiments, the district education officer, Chandrakala, emphasised the need for a pressure-free learning environment to help students reach their full potential.

She reiterated the commitment to providing quality education to all.

The conference served as a platform to galvanise support for child-friendly schools and to reaffirm the NCRC’s dedication to protecting the rights of children.
