Odisha Reports 8,159 Child Marriages in 8 Years: Dy CM

Experts and activists attribute the persistence of these problems to poverty, lack of education, and entrenched societal norms.

Bhubaneswar: Despite ongoing efforts to curb child marriage, Odisha continues to witness a significant number of cases, with 8,159 instances reported over the last six years, according to official data presented in the state Assembly.

In a written response, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida revealed that Nabarangpur district has recorded the highest number of child marriages, with 1,347 cases. Ganjam follows closely with 966 reported cases, while Koraput district has registered 636 instances. The prevalence of child marriages in these regions underscores deep-rooted socio-economic and cultural challenges that hinder efforts to eradicate the practice.

“The government has been taking several steps to prevent child marriages, including awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of laws,” Parida stated. However, the figures indicate that the issue remains widespread, especially in rural and tribal pockets of the state.

Apart from child marriage, Odisha is also struggling with the issue of child labour. Over the same six-year period, authorities have rescued 328 children engaged in child labour, further highlighting the vulnerability of children in the state.

Experts and activists attribute the persistence of these problems to poverty, lack of education, and entrenched societal norms.

“Many families see early marriage as a way to secure a girl’s future, especially in impoverished communities. Economic hardship and lack of awareness continue to drive child marriages and child labour,” said Sushant Kumar Dalai, a social activist.

The state government has been implementing various welfare programmes, including the ‘Nirbhaya Kadhi’ initiative and other schemes aimed at empowering girls and improving education accessibility. However, activists stress the need for stronger enforcement, community involvement, and better rehabilitation programs to address these challenges effectively.

With child marriage and child labour persisting as major concerns, stakeholders emphasize the importance of sustained efforts to protect the rights and future of Odisha’s children.
