Odisha Scientist Behind Breast Cancer Medicine Dies of Heart Attack

BHUBANESWAR: Dr Sandeep Mishra, a senior scientist at the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar, on Sunday died of “heart-attack.”

He is survived his wife and a little son.

Dr Mishra, 56, was famous for his pioneering role in making new discoveries for effective treatment of breast cancer.

According to family members of the deceased, the scientist felt uneasy on Saturday evening following which he was rushed to the Capital Hospital. The doctors immediately administered him some injections and medicines. However, the scientist died moments later.

In 2002, the scientist had claimed that by modulating GPR141, doctors can regulate breast cancer progression and metastasis.

GPRs stands for G-Protein Coupled Receptors (GPRs). The GPRs represent the largest family of cell surface receptors accounting for more than two per cent of the total genes encoded by the human genome.

Deregulated GPR signaling promotes the development, survival, and metastasis of tumor cells evident in multiple types of cancer including breast cancer. However, the molecular mechanism of the orphan molecule, GPR141, in advancing breast cancer remains elusive.

“GPR141 exhibits pronounced migratory and proliferative behavior of breast cancer cells driving oncogenic pathways, validated both in vitro and in vivo. Our findings unravel the role of GPR141 in breast cancer proliferation, metastasis, and influencing tumor microenvironment,” Dr Mishra had observed.

Modulating GPR141 could pave the way for a better therapeutic approach to regulating breast cancer progression and metastasis. This will serve as a boon in the field of breast cancer research globally, making it a cutting edge and successful breast cancer therapeutic method, added Dr Mishra.

The scientist’s findings, as he claimed, had been accepted for publication in Molecular Oncology journal on behalf of Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) by Wiley.

The physician had a dream to present his findings before the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and seek his support for spreading the message on his new findings that will go a long way in tackling breast cancer cases.

“Dr Mishra had brought glory to the state by achieving a breakthrough by discovering medicine for breast cancer. His untimely death is a great loss to the country,” said Sukanta Kumar Mohanty, his neighbour.

Dr Mishra’s discovery was also published in several famous science as well as Nature Group of Journals.

Sources said the deceased scientist was under trauma after a researcher at the ILS brought charges of “harassment” against us.
