MP CM Slams Mamata Banerjee Over Mrityu Kumbh Remark, Demands Apology

Yadav demanded an apology, asserting that her choice of words was an insult to Hindu religious sentiments

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her “Mrityu Kumbh” remark, calling it a “low-grade” description of the sacred Maha Kumbh festival.

Condemning her statement, Mr. Yadav demanded an apology, asserting that her choice of words was an insult to Hindu religious sentiments. He stated that Maha Kumbh is a festival of faith, reverence, and trust, and that such remarks reflect her mindset.

“Using the term ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ to describe unfortunate incidents during Maha Kumbh amounts to insulting Hindu religion,” he said, adding that the Opposition, including the Congress, had lost public credibility due to such remarks. He further said, “May the Almighty give her the wisdom to respect the sentiments of Hindus.”

Ms. Banerjee made the controversial remark in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday while referring to recent stampedes—one in Prayagraj on January 29 and another at New Delhi railway station on February 15. She reportedly stated, “This is ‘Mrityu Kumbh’... I respect Maha Kumbh, I respect the holy Ganga Maa, but there was no proper planning in managing the festival.”

She also criticized the prevalence of VIP culture at the event, pointing out that special camp facilities were being offered to VIPs at a cost of ₹1 lakh, while arrangements for the poor remained inadequate.
