Srinagar: A top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Junaid Ahmed Bhat involved in a recent major terror attack was gunned down by the security forces during a gunfight raging the Dachigam hills of Kashmiri capital since Monday night, officials said.

They said that the J&K police’s counterinsurgency Special Operations Group (SOG) together with the Indian Army launched a cordon-and-search-operation (Caso) in the Dachigam – Tral axis around midnight on Monday after learning about the presence of a group of militants in the wooded area.

"In the ongoing operation, one terrorist is killed and has been identified as Junaid Ahmed Bhat", a police spokesman said. He added, "Bhat was a 'Category A' terrorist involved in a series of terror attacks including the killing of seven civilians at Gagangir in the Ganderbal district."

On October 20, a local doctor and six construction workers were killed and four others injured in a terror attack at Gagangir along the Srinagar -Leh highway.
