Hyderabad: An increasing number of youngsters, particularly those in their late teens and early twenties, who used to consume drugs, have now turned peddlers, tempted by money it fetches.
The problem is more prevalent among youth, who are frustrated at not getting employment. These people take to peddling by first procuring banned substances from other states and selling them in the city at higher prices, said a senior officer.
In some states physical activities are mandatory for teenagers and young adults in order to keep them engaged and active. These people are less likely to fall prey to drugs. This should be implemented in our state as well,” opined social activist K. Amerander, adding “the pleasure from physical activities is healthier than the temporary high from drugs.”
“We have seen a 30 per cent increase in people seeking relief from drug addiction compared to last year,” said clinical psychologist Dr Ch. Veerender.
Some parents feel helpless even after noticing that their children have turned drug addicts because of family circumstances and responsibilities.
"It's quite challenging to handle these so-called powerful youth with limited knowledge," said Shaikpet resident Veeram Satyanarayana, father of V. Nageswar, who is presently in police custody for supplying ganja.
Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) DCP S. Reshmi Perumul urged parents and guardians to keep a watch on the activities of their children. She said the public could inform the police about drug-related abuse at phone number 8712661601.
