Visitors slam ill-maintained zoo
Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park needs to scale up its amenities if it has to retain its popularity. This was the orchestrated opinion of many visitors, who arrived in large numbers on Sunday.
They decried the pathetic state-of-affairs like broken walkways and footpaths, untidy fish tanks in the aquarium area, unhygienic food and washrooms that were in terrible condition. They said that the water where ducks swim smelt awful.
The other water bodies too had garbage all around and the dirty water is a potential health hazard, said a visitor.
K. Swathi, who is specially-abled, said that the broken footpath made it difficult for her to use the wheelchair
“It is difficult for me to use the footpath as it is broken and my husband helped me through,” she said.
Meanwhile, forest department officials said that the onus of keeping the zoo in good condition also lies with the people.
“Many visitors tend to throw eatables towards animals despite our instructions against such practices. It is hard to control them. These mostly happen when staff goes on a lunch break,” said D. Elamanch, a forest department employee posted at the zoo.
This opinion was also endorsed by the curator Sunil Hiremath.
