World Food Safety Day: Crackdown on adulterated food will continue

Hyderabad: The ongoing crackdown on establishments selling adulterated food will continue including in pubs, bars and restaurants. As part of the move, a mobile app will be developed to facilitate complaints related to food adulteration and meetings with hoteliers will also be held.

The complaint reported on the app will directly be escalated to the officer in-charge of that particular jurisdiction.

“The focus will be on the complaints related to adulterated food in addition to random inspections that are presently underway,” said an official from the health department. The inspections will be done by the recently formed task force teams of the Commissioner of Food Safety. To curb food adulteration, the authorities have also decided to spread awareness among people through social media.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dyvanidhi, Food Safety Officer (FSO) said every day they receive at least 30 complaints from the city and 15 to 20 establishments are raided. “Most of the complaints are related to hygiene of food, supermarkets who sell expired food products,” he said.

Around 68 to 70 cases pertain to synthetic food colors that are used in sweets and desserts. The food safety officials also warned of stringent action in case of violations. “Any person who manufactures, sells, stores, distributes or imports any food which is sub-standard, shall be liable to a penalty which may extend to five lakh rupees,” said an official from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
