Vijayawada: The 1992 batch IPS officer Harish Kumar Gupta has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh. Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has issued the orders on Wednesday.
The order stated that Gupta, director general, vigilance and enforcement, and ex-officio principal secretary to govt, GA (V&E) dept, is placed in full additional charge of the post of DGP until further orders.
D. Tirumala Rao, IPS and DGP (coordination) has been relieved with effect from January 31 consequent on his retirement from service. Several names of IPS officials had been circulated in the news for the DGP past. Harish Gupta belongs to Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has opted for Gupta. Notably, the Central Election Commission appointed Harish Gupta as the DGP during the elections last May. The EC then transferred Rajendranath Reddy following political allegations.
At that time, in terms of seniority, the AP CS suggested the names of Harish Gupta, Dwaraka Tirumala Rao and Madireddy Pratap to the EC, but the choice fell on Gupta.
It may be recalled that after the elections, Dwaraka Tirumala Rao was about to retire without taking the post of DGP. Hence, CM Naidu gave a chance to Tirumala Rao as DGP. Now that Rao is retiring, the chance went to Gupta.
Government sources said there is a possibility that Dwaraka Tirumala Rao will continue as RTC MD after his retirement. He is currently the acting MD, besides being the DGP.
