5 People Go Missing After Venturing into Tungabhadra River

Authorities said the search operation is continuing on a war footing to locate the missing individuals

KURNOOL: Five persons went missing after entering the Tungabhadra River at Mantralayam in Kurnool district on Friday, prompting an intensive search operation by police and rescue teams.

According to police, the victims had come to Mantralayam to attend a Satyanarayana Vratam at a relative's residence. After the ceremony, a group went to the river for a swim. Police said the missing persons are believed to have ventured into deep waters, leading to the incident.
The missing have been identified as Sandhya, 22, Yuvan Chandra, 5, of Hyderabad, Satish, 35, Raghavendra, 25, of Mantralayam and Dhanu, 23. Police said two of the victims were from Uravakonda in Anantapur district. Aparna, a native of Adoni, escaped safely.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and launched a search operation with the assistance of local fishermen and swimmers.
Rescue personnel said deep pits in certain stretches of the Tungabhadra River may have contributed to the incident.
Search operations were continuing late into the evening, with Mantralayam police intensifying efforts to trace the missing persons.
Family members and relatives gathered at the site as rescue teams continued the operation.
