8 SuperCritical Units working in AP
Union Minister of State for Power, Sripad Naik, has said 8 super power critical units with a capacity of 5840MW are working in Andhra Pradesh, out of a total of 98 such units with a capacity of 68,070MW and 8 Ultra Super-Critical Units in the country now.

Kakinada:Union Minister of State for Power, Sripad Naik, has said 8 super power critical units with a capacity of 5840MW are working in Andhra Pradesh, out of a total of 98 such units with a capacity of 68,070MW and 8 Ultra Super-Critical Units in the country now.
The minister was replying to questions from Eluru Lok Sabha member P. Mahesh Kumar, on whether the government has conducted any study or survey on efficiency of Thermal Power Plants (TPPS) in the country during the last five years. He also asked whether the government considered upgrading the existing technology in TPP to increase efficiency across the country.
The minister said that as per a report of the central electricity authority, the All India thermal efficiency of coal and lignite-based plants was 35.02 per cent in 2022-23. To improve the energy efficiency in TPP, the Sector has been included under the PAT scheme.
This scheme stipulates improvement in the heat rate of TPPs in a cycle of three years and it covers a total capacity of 184GW including the 11.2GW capacity of TPPs in Andhra Pradesh. As a result of implementation of the scheme, the TPP sector has achieved energy savings of 7.73 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MToE) including 0.146 MToE in Andhra Pradesh.
The minister said power generation is a de-licensed activity and promoters of TPPS take a conscious decision in regard to suitable technologies for their TPPs. However, the minister said the department encourages installation of efficient supercritical /ultra su-critical units over super-critical coal based thermal units as these units are more efficient than sub-critical units.
He said the power firms can choose suitable technology for this.
