Andhra Pradesh: Centre’s Commits Rs 18K Crore for Orvakal Industrial Hub

Kurnool: Orvakal mega industrial hub is poised for significant development, thanks to the central government committing Rs 1,800 crore for enhancing infrastructure within the hub. This is expected to catalyse the establishment of numerous industrial units in the region.

State government is already engaging with entrepreneurs to set up their businesses at Orvakal. Jayaraj Ispat Steel has already commenced operations, signaling the beginning of industrial activity in the hub.

A significant aspect of Orvakal's development strategy is its pollution index (PI) scoring system, introduced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in 2016. The PI scoring methodology classifies industries based on various pollution parameters, including water and air pollution, hazardous waste generation, fuel consumption and wastewater production.

This classification helps in determining the suitability of locations for different types of industries.

Orvakal is categorised under the “Red” category of the PI index, where industries are permitted despite their higher pollution score, compared to the “Green” category, such as Sri City, which has stricter limitations.

The Red category, covering 64 sectors, presents a broad opportunity for setting up diverse industries at Orvakal. Officials are optimistic that central funding will significantly enhance infrastructure in the industrial zones, thereby attracting more entrepreneurs.

Industries minister T.G. Bharath disclosed that discussions are going on with various industrialists who are keen to invest in the region. The government plans to engage top consultancy firms to ensure that infrastructure issues are resolved efficiently.

State government is already working on resolving critical issues related to water, electricity, roads and rail connectivity. Introduction of flight services from Kurnool to Vijayawada is also in pipeline to support industrial sector’s growth in Orvakal.
