Andhra Pradesh Decked Up for Grand Christmas Celebrations

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh is abuzz with excitement as the state gears up for grand Christmas celebrations. From the historic churches of Visakhapatnam to the vibrant congregations in Vijayawada, the festive season promises a delightful blend of spirituality, community bonding, and cultural heritage.

In Visakhapatnam, the coastal city known for its century-old churches, preparations are in full swing. Iconic landmarks such as St. Paul’s Church, Ross Hill Church, St. John’s Church, and St. Anthony’s Church are at the heart of the festivities. These historic churches, known for their architectural grandeur and spiritual significance, are tastefully adorned with lights, stars, and Christmas cribs.

St. Paul’s Church, located near Waltair Club and the Governor’s House, stands out as a beacon of Christmas cheer. With a history spanning over 180 years, the church illuminates Waltair Junction with its vibrant decorations and melodious carols, creating a magical atmosphere. Ross Hill Church, perched on a hilltop, offers breathtaking views of the city and the port area. Built in 1864 for an English judge, Monsieur Ross, and later converted into a chapel, it is a serene haven for worshippers and tourists alike. The special mass held here imparts a profound sense of divinity.

St. John’s Church, established in 1846 near the old post office with funding from the East India Company, is another highlight. Designed by Sir Arthur Cotton, the church features exquisite stained-glass paintings from Europe and teak wood interiors imported from Burma. The ancient pipe organ housed here remains operational, adding to its old-world charm. Similarly, St. Anthony’s Church, built in 1852 near Jagadamba for Tamil-speaking Catholics, is a hub of festive activity. Known for its community spirit and educational initiatives, it attracts visitors with its warm, inclusive celebrations.

Meanwhile, Vijayawada is witnessing equally vibrant preparations. The city’s prominent churches, including Gunadala Matha Shrine, CSI All Saints Church, Philadelphia AG Church, and Zion Fellowship Church, are adorned with festive décor. At St. Paul’s Basilica Church, a unique 4D storytelling experience is drawing crowds. This initiative, presented by the Sunday school, brings Bible stories to life with immersive depictions such as Noah’s Ark, the parting of the Red Sea, and nativity scenes.

Pastor Mani Kiran of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church shared details of the special services planned for the season. “The Christmas Eve mass starts at 7:30 pm, while the Christmas Day service begins at 10:30 am. For New Year’s Eve, a night service will run until 2 am, followed by morning prayers,” he said.

The season is also a time for family gatherings and acts of kindness. “Christmas is the biggest festival for us. We come together, sing carols, bake cakes, and visit orphanages to share our joy,” said Tejaswi from Gannavaram.

With a combination of historic charm, modern creativity, and heartfelt devotion, Andhra Pradesh’s Christmas celebrations promise a memorable experience for locals and visitors alike.
