Andhra Pradesh: No more garbage tax collection

The Assembly gave its consent to the amendment to the Municipal Act, stalling collection of garbage tax in December 2024

Vijayawada: Finally, the public in Andhra Pradesh have been relieved of 'garbage tax' which was introduced and implemented by the YSRC government.

The urban development ministry issued notification that 'garbage tax' had been scrapped from December 31, 2024.

The Assembly gave its consent to the amendment to the Municipal Act, stalling collection of garbage tax in December 2024.

After the Governor's approval, a gazette was released pertaining to 'garbage tax'.

In a fresh development, the municipal and urban development ministries also issued notification on the same.

The gazette mentioned about the removal of Section 170-B in the AP Municipal Act, 1965 and Section 491-A in the Municipal Corporation Act- 1955 relating to the collection of garbage tax. In November 2021, the YSRC government began collecting 'garbage tax' from 40 municipalities and urban areas in the state. Over Rs 187.02 crore was collected so far.

Despite the public expressing resentment over the collection of garbage tax, the previous government continued with the practice steadfast.
