Andhra Pradesh: Officials plan tourism festivals in district
Visakhapatnam: To enhance the tourism and promote the local handicrafts, collector A. S. Dinesh Kumar unveiled comprehensive plans to develop tourist areas and support tribal youth on Thursday.
The collector said that the central component of strategy is the establishment of a Destination Development Authority in the district to lead these initiatives. He proposed organising tourism festivals in popular locations such as Araku Valley and Maredumilli, directing officials to draft proposals that would be submitted to the government for approval. Kumar says, “These festivals are intended not only to boost local tourism but also to provide a platform for showcasing the region's rich cultural heritage.”
Kumar suggested creating a calendar of festivals and producing a short promotional film to be shared on social media, highlighting the district's attractions. He also discussed the need for arrangements to accommodate tourists in areas that currently lack hotel facilities and proposed introducing adventure sports in popular tourist spots.
Addressing the environmental concerns during the meeting, the collector underscored the importance of enforcing a plastic ban at weekly fairs and advised ITD APOs to raise awareness about this initiative and sanitation practices among tourists. Collector recommended promoting cloth bags as eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics in weekly markets.
