Pawan sees wealth creation from waste

Vijayawada: By employing scientific methods, we can generate wealth from waste. Introduction of creative techniques in managing solid and liquid waste will put a permanent end to garbage problem in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said here on Saturday.

Pawan Kalyan, along with principal secretary (panchayat raj and rural development) Shashi Bhushan Kumar, and MLC P. Hari Prasad, inaugurated an exhibition titled ‘Garbage To Gold’ organised by the Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre on procedures to be followed in liquid and solid management in rural areas and various products that can be produced out of the waste generated.

SLRM project director C. Srinivasan said burning the leaves and branches of trees and dry waste is leading to air pollution. The same dry waste can be converted into compost, which can be used as manure.

Further, he said vermicompost generated through waste has more demand in the market, as it acts as a key catalyst in adding important nutrients to the soil. “Local bodies should take steps in this regard,” Srinivasan emphasised.

Speaking on the occasion, Pawan Kalyan said waste management has become a challenge for local bodies. Scientific research is underway for solid and liquid management.

The Deputy CM wanted the panchayat raj and rural development department to organise an expert workshop on waste management involving panchayat raj representatives, DWCRA groups, and other sections. This would sensitise people on waste management.

“It will promote better ways to generate wealth from waste, while providing employment and benefiting nature,” he added.
