Andhra Pradesh: Quit India Day observed in Bapatla
Vijayawada: Bapatla MLA Vegesana Narendra Varmasaid 1942 was a monumental year in the history of the Indian National Congress. The Quit India Movement, the final stage of India’s freedom struggle, took a violent turn with riots breaking out in different towns, including Baptla town.
The MLA recalled that Baptla played a notable part in the Quit India Movement. He said, “Angry mobs attacked the Bapatla railway station and destroyed the equipment. People also attacked the sub-court. One freedom fighter sat in the sub-judge’s chair and declared that Bapatla was a free and independent town.”
On Monday, Quit India Day was celebrated in Bapatla under the aegis of the Forum for Better Bapatla. On the occasion, Narendra Varma, Bapatla tahsildar Krishnakant, forum secretaries P.C. Sai Babu, B. Babu Rao Hanumanji, Bhaskara Rao, and Sreenivasa Rao paid floral tributes to the freedom fighters at the freedom fighters stone plaque in the town.
