Andhra Pradesh: Tipplers hopeful of quality liquor at less price

Vijayawada: The Telugu Desam government is likely to review the state’s liquor policy and provide all brands in the liquor shops at reduced prices after it assumes power.

TD chief Chandrababu Naidu had made such a promise during the election campaign. In view of this, tipplers are eagerly waiting for the new government to take charge.
Videos of tipplers consuming liquor on the roads and dancing in joy turned viral on social media platforms. They were heard asking Naidu to immediately change the state’s liquor policy in ways as would benefit them.

According to reports, the revenue from liquor sales during the five years of the TD government was Rs 75,284 crore. This hugely increased to Rs 1,24,312 crore in the five years of the YSRC government. Thus, liquor became the main source of revenue to the government.
The liquor revenue in the last year of the TD government (2018-19) was Rs 20,128 crore. It rose progressively to Rs 30,078 crore in the last year of YSRC government.

Notably, Naidu, during the 2024 election campaign, stated that Jagan Mohan Reddy was spoiling the health of the people by supplying "cheap quality" booze. “I promise you to reduce the price and would supply quality liquor after we come to power,” he was quoted as saying.
Naidu had also included the control of liquor prices and cancellation of toxic liquor brands in the TD - Jana Sena joint election manifesto 2024, released in the name of Prajagalam.
According to the estimates, around six to ten lakh people are habituated to liquor consumption. They were angry with the Jagan government over the huge increase in liquor prices and unavailability of several brands. It is believed they voted for the TD in the present elections and are now awaiting action from.

A liquor consumer, G Jagadish, said that earlier one liquor peg was available for Rs 60 but the price rose to Rs 180 to Rs 200 after the YSRC came into power. “We are habituated to some brands but those have disappeared from shops in AP during the last five years.”
TD leaders promised tipplers that Naidu would change the liquor policy and reduce the prices at the earliest.
