Andhra Pradesh: Tobacco Seedling Costs Surge Amid Expanding Cultivation

Kurnool: The profitability of tobacco cultivation over the past two to three years has led to a sharp rise in seedling prices, with each bag now costing between Rs 3,000 and Rs 3,500—significantly higher than in earlier seasons.

Farmers in Prakasam district, buoyed by consistent returns, are planning to expand cultivation beyond the areas approved by the Tobacco Board, despite the financial strain posed by increased seedling costs.

During the 2022–23 season, tobacco cultivation exceeded approved limits, covering 61,639 hectares against the sanctioned 57,774 hectares.

This year, farmers aim to further increase the cultivated area, encouraged by growing demand and favourable weather conditions. Recent rains have boosted planting activity, intensifying demand for seedlings. A single bundle of seedlings now costs over Rs 2,500.

Seedling sales are thriving in tobacco-growing hubs such as Tangutur and Kondapi, which supply high-quality seedlings. Farmers from across the district, including Naguluppalapadu, Cheemakurthy, Ponnaluru, Ongole, and Podili, are purchasing saplings grown in sandy soils.

Already, 200 hectares within the Kondapi board limits have been planted.

“We are planning to expand our cultivation area despite higher seedling costs. Tobacco has been profitable over the last two to three years, and we are optimistic about prices this year,” said Y. Ramanjaneyulu, a farmer from Kondapi.

The exceptional quality of this year’s crop is driving demand, with premium varieties fetching up to Rs 365 per kilogram.

Around 49 companies actively participated in auctions, ensuring farmers received competitive prices for their produce.
