Andhra Pradesh: Will thwart NDA designs, says Subba Reddy

Though the YSRC has a majority in GVMC council, elections have become interesting after 12 YSRC members switched to the alliance. Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy recently summoned all the corporators to Tadepalli to prevent further defections

VISAKHAPATNAM: Coming down heavily on the NDA alliance that may be planning to grab GVMC standing committee, Y.V. Subba Reddy, regional coordinator of YSRC, said they would thwart all ugly designs of the alliance in the standing committee elections scheduled to be held on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with the corporators in Visakhapatnam, Subba Reddy said the ruling alliance lured some corporators who won on YSRC symbol. But YSRC has its own plans to win the elections, he added.

“We have 80 percent of voters with us for the MLC elections, but the alliance is still putting up a candidate. But YSRC always practiced value-based politics,” Subba Reddy said, adding YSRC would win both MLC and GVMC standing committee polls.

Though the YSRC has a majority in GVMC council, elections have become interesting after 12 YSRC members switched to the alliance. Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy recently summoned all the corporators to Tadepalli to prevent further defections.

Local MLAs and MPs of the NDA alliance are focused on the standing committee elections to demonstrate their strength and they believe these elections can lead to removal of the mayor through a no-confidence motion.

Ten nominations each from the NDA alliance and YSRCP were filed for 10 standing committee posts. In 2021 elections, YSRCP won 58 out of 98 corporator seats while TDP secured 30, Jana Sena three and CPI, CPM, and BJP won one each. Independents got four wards.

However, 12 YSRCP corporators switched allegiance to TDP (7) and Jana Sena (5), reducing YSRCP's strength to 48 while the NDA alliance now has 47 members.
