Andhra seeks time extension in Krishna water dispute case
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has requested a four-week extension from the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II (KWDT-II) to file its counter-statement to Telangana's arguments in their water-sharing dispute.
The chief engineer of Andhra's water resources department recently sent a letter to the KWDT registrar in New Delhi, requesting the time extension. The letter explains that due to the recent assembly elections and formation of a new government in June, water resource officials need to brief the new administration on all pending water-related cases before tribunals, the Supreme Court, and the National Green Tribunal. The letter also mentions that Andhra's previous Advocate-on-Record and Advocate General have resigned, and replacements are being appointed. A new legal team to represent the state before the KWDT-II is being formed.
Citing the need for legal vetting and government approval of the counter-statement, the chief engineer argues that at least four weeks are required to complete these procedures.Andhra Pradesh has appealed to the KWDT-II to grant the extension and reschedule the hearings currently scheduled for July 15 and 16.
