AP Chief Secretary hails Jyotiba Phule's services to society

Vijayawada: Chief Secretary Neerabh Kumar Prasad has hailed the services of social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule in campaigns like ‘abolition of the caste system’ and promotion of women's education.

He was addressing an event at the AP Secretariat on Thursday to commemorate the death anniversary of Jyotiba Phule. The CS paid floral tributes to the portrait of Phule.

Kumar said the efforts made by Jyotiba Phule in the eradication of untouchability and advocating social development for people from the backward castes were well-documented. “Phule opposed child marriages and supported the right of widows to remarry.”

“At that time, to promote social equality in the society, he sought to unite the lower castes and strived to remove the socio-economic barriers that existed under the caste system.”

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule founded the reform society ‘Satyashodhak Samaj’ (Society for Truth Seekers) in 1873 to end social inequalities. Phule wrote plays like ‘Trithiyaratna’ and many poems to educate the lower classes on “how much they were being deceived by the spread of religious hatred.”

The books Jyotiba Phule wrote, like Gulamgiri, reflected the social trends that prevailed here. Jyotiba Phule had also established special shelters for widows, orphaned women and infants, the CS said.

Principal secretary to CM’s office, M Ravichandra, CMO secretaries AV Rajamouli and PS Pradyumna, GAD (Political) and Services Secretary P Bhaskar have paid floral tributes to the portrait of Phule.
Many Secretariat officials and employees participated in the programme.
