AP: Elephants continue rampage, destroy 180 coconut trees

Visakhapatnam: Elephants continued their rampage for the second day on Sunday, destroying over 180 coconut trees in Narasipuram village, located in Parvathipuram Manyam district. On Saturday, the herd also destroyed an autorickshaw in Gadabavalasa, though no injuries were reported.

District forest officer of Parvathipuram Manyam, GAP Prasuna, stated that the elephants uprooted the coconut trees to eat the tender parts of the roots. "In the process, they destroyed nearly 180 trees in the early hours," she said, adding that a compensation of Rs 2,000 would be provided for each tree. She mentioned that applications have already been collected and are currently being processed to pay the compensation amount to the farmers.
Prasuna urged residents of nearby villages to remain alert and not to provoke the elephants, noting that the forest officials are keeping track of the herd. Recently, elephants mauled a 75-year-old farmer to death in Peda Bondapalli village.
