AP gets 10% more rain from NE monsoon
Visakhapatnam:Andhra Pradesh recorded 316.5mm of rainfall in the three months from October 1 to Dec 31, during the northeast monsoon, against the 2024’s normal rainfall of 287.2mm. The 10 per cent excess of rain helped the farmers in several regions.
A total of five districts (four in Rayalaseema and one in coastal AP regions) received excess rain while one district received a large excess, 11 districts (ten in coastal AP and one in Rayalaseema) experienced deficient rainfall.
One district in the coastal region recorded large deficit rain form Oct 1 to December 2024.
A total of eight districts, including two in Rayalaseema region received normal rainfall during the period. Yanam (Puducherry) experienced deficit rainfall.
Director of IMD-Amaravati, Stella S, said the Rayalaseema sub-division, comprising eight districts, received 344.4mm rainfall against 236.4mm normal rainfall from Oct to Dec. This was around 46 per cent excess rainfall.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam sub-division (18 districts and Yanam) received 292.3mm rainfall against the normal 322.9mm rainfall, around 9 per cent deficit.
Though the rainfall distribution was uneven during the period, the state has recorded normal rainfall from October to December, she stated.
The state received 21 per cent of excess rainfall during the south-west monsoon (June 1 to Sept 30, 2024). It received a cumulative rainfall of 629.2mm against the normal of 521.6mm during the monsoon period.
According to IMD data and observations, between October and December in 2024 alone, seven systems formed over the Bay of Bengal, including a cyclone. The systems triggered heavy rains in parts of the state, particularly in Rayalaseema region, resulting in normal rainfall in the state.
