Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh has received 58 per cent surplus rainfall between June 1 and June 29 during this southwest monsoon, according to data made available by IMD Amaravati on Saturday.
This is contrary to what the IMD had mentioned in its outlook. It had speculated that the rainfall would be less in June and July and surplus in August and September.
Sri Sathyasai district received the highest rainfall with 180 per cent departure from the normal. It received 154.2 mm rainfall against the normal 55.1 mm. Annamaya received the second highest rainfall with 175.2 mm against the normal 53.6 mm, registering a departure of 177.
Similarly, Nandyal district received 217.4 mm against normal 90.5 mm, registering a departure of 140 per cent. Anantapur received 147 mm of rainfall against normal 61.9 mm with departure of 138 per cent.
Bapatla received the lowest rainfall of 77.5 mm against normal 85.4 mm, down by 10 per cent. ASR district followed recording 155.6 mm against the normal 154.3 mm, 5 per cent less than the normal fall.
Barring a few dry days, the state has been receiving thunderstorms and heavy rainfall at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. But the rainfall has not been enough to fill the reservoirs in the state.
All the 108 major and medium reservoirs in the state have a capacity of 865.64 TMC. But as on date, only 201.06 TMC is available, while last year it had 333.57 TMC.
The IMD, in its second stage of long-range forecast of southwest monsoon, said below normal monsoon rainfall is expected in northeast India, while normal to above normal rainfall is predicted for northwest, central and south peninsular regions.
With La Nina evolving in the mid monsoon period, more rains are expected during August and September, the IMD report said.
