AP government to honour organ donors, family members post death

Vijayawada: AP government has issued guidelines to honour deceased organ donors and their family members who consent to harvesting of organs of the dead under the “Jeevandan” scheme.

Special chief secretary (Health) M.T. Krishna Babu on Thursday explained in GO No. 95 that organ donation is an act of supreme nobility, wherein the deceased donor gives a second lease of life to many persons who require replacement of organs like kidneys, liver, heart, intestines, pancreas, hands and skin. The organs are harvested with the consent of family members of the deceased.

The GO mandates that the dean / medical superintendent / chief medical officer of the concerned government / private hospitals, which register under Jeevandan, inform their district collector about the organ retrieval from the brain dead person.

The district collector will honour the deceased organ donors on behalf of the state government. In case the district collector is unable to attend the function to honour the deceased, he would depute a senior district / divisional official to accord the honour.

A wreath or garland will be placed on the mortal remains of the deceased donor. Family members of the donor will be felicitated with a shawl, certificate and some flowers at a permissible cost of Rs 1,000 per donor.

The state government will disburse an amount of Rs 10,000 to the family members of the deceased donor for conducting a dignified funeral. A certificate of organ donation, apart from a memento, will be handed over to the donor family members.

Free transportation will be provided by authorities for shifting the body of the deceased donor from the hospital to his / her residence / cremation place.

An official nominated by the district collector will be present on behalf of the state government during the performance of last rites.

Two staff members from AP State Organ and Tissues Transplantation Organisation or local representatives of the government medical college / institution will visit the donor’s hospital / home and felicitate the family member, the GO stated.
