AP: Mano Bandhu doing a yeoman’s job for destitutes

Anantapur: Numerous mentally ill individuals, from both rural and urban areas, often find themselves separated from their loved ones and most of them end up as destitutes on the roadside. They are in urgent need for systemic support and compassion.

Mano Bandhu, established in 2021, is dedicated to addressing the heart-wrenching issue of mentally ill destitute people aimlessly wandering India's streets. These individuals are often seen in deeply unfortunate circumstances—lost in their own worlds, with long, tangled hair, disheveled appearances, and a gaunt demeanor.
Despite their dire situation, many passersby overlook these individuals, failing to recognize their inherent humanity and the respect they deserve. Mano Bandhu aims to restore dignity to these lives by providing comprehensive care and support to those who have no one else to rely on.
A camp was conducted at Anantapur two days ago whpch sent six patients to psychiatric department RIMS Kadapa.
A destitute woman, 45, wandering in Telugu Talli circle was provided with sedation and lifted in the ambulance, Rayalaseema regional coordinator Dr Suresh Babu told DC. “We noticed she had no security as she sleeps on roads”, he observed.
The organisation operates as a fully charitable and non-political body working free of cost on mental health issues. “Our mission extends to fostering a stigma-free society where individuals with mental health disorders can lead productive lives with dignity and respect. We actively contribute to nation-building through our inclusive and compassionate efforts” Suresh Babu said.

The National Mental Health Survey 2023 reveals that in the 36 largest countries, 12 billion productive days are lost annually due to depression and anxiety, costing approximately $925 billion. In India alone, 42 per cent of the corporate workforce is grappling with depression or anxiety disorders.

The survey results indicate that nearly half of the workforce is at risk of mental health issues, with women facing greater risks than men. This data underscores the urgent need for corporates to adopt scientifically informed approaches to understanding and addressing mental health.

Managing Trustee B. Ramakrishnan Raju , Regional Coordinator Dr M. Suresh Babu, convener B. N. Prasad, REF president Dr Ramachandra and VDG Lion M.Virupaksha Reddy appeal to people to utilise Mano Bandhu's initiatives and also supports the noble cause.
