AP: One serious after toxic leak at Mulagada shipping unit
Visakhapatnam: One of the five workers, who inhaled a toxic gas that leaked at the Shravan Shipping Company in Mulagada industrial area of Visakhapatnam late on Friday night, is seriously ill.
Police said Gunupuru Ramu, Lakshmi, Lata, Kumari and Demudu Babu had been loading chemical Acetanilide from one container to another at the shipping company when the chemical powder leaked from one of the bags. The powder reacted with the atmosphere releasing a toxic gas, inhaling which the five workers started feeling irritation in their respiratory tracts and mucous membranes.
Company authorities rushed the workers to a private hospital in Gajuwaka. When district collector M.N. Harendra Prasad came to know about the mishap, he immediately ordered shifting of the workers to a corporate hospital in the city for better treatment.
Doctors say the condition of Demudu Babu is serious.
Subsequently, the collector, accompanied by local MLA Ganababu, visited the hospital to check the condition of the victims. Ganababu offered support to the victims in coordination with Shravan Shipping and local authorities.
